Articles - Three New Album Reviews

• April 16th, 2012

Here's our latest batch of reviews, three new albums - including one LP which is now one of our favourite albums of recent years! Also, please welcome Fair Share Music to the Labelled Independent family!

Album Review - Mars Volta, 'Noctourniquet' (Fairsharemusic.com)

Lyricist and vocalist for The Mars Volta, Cedric Bixler-Zavala, has described the sound of the band’s sixth studio album as ‘Future Punk’ – a label that baffles almost as much as it intrigues. It’s fitting then that the tracks on offer on the new LP are equally oblique.

Album Review - Seth Lakeman, 'Tales From The Barrel House' (Fairsharemusic.com)

Incredibly talented folk multi-intrumentalist, Seth Lakeman has been releasing solo material for ten years, though it seems far less. His 6th album sees him step into the fray for the second time since the recent UK folk explosion. The first offering, ’Hearts and Minds’, held the public’s imagination very briefly before falling away in its second week of release.

Album Review - Jake Morley, 'Many Fish To Fry' (Iammusic.TV)

With the current wave of male solo singer-songwriters taking their place in the public consciousness it’s hard to say whether or not Jake Morley’s emergence is perfectly timed. The current focus on artists such as Ben Howard and Ed Sheeran could mean that more people will be willing to hear what Morley has to offer, but in order to steal some of their spotlight it will take someone of immense talent and drive.

Fortunately, Jake Morley has both of these, as evidenced throughout this sparkling debut LP which approaches the acoustic genre with a distinct folk-blues feel. Listening through the album for the first few times it’s hard to pick out highlights due to the strength of every track on offer and the best recommendation is to sit down for an hour and fully take in everything it has to give.

Article - Ex-Wet Wet Wet star album review

• March 29th, 2012

I recently wrote an article reviewing the new solo project from Wet Wet Wet founder Graeme Clark - if you'd like to know more here it is:

ALBUM REVIEW - GRAEME CLARK, 'MR UNDERSTANDING (Indie Music Mag)

Once you know Graeme Clark’s background there are certain expectations of this album it’s hard to ignore. As bass guitarist and co-founder of 80’s/90’s pop behemoths Wet Wet Wet he was partly responsible for some of the most successful pop hits of the decade, one of which went on to hold number 1 spot in the singles chart for a record bothering number of weeks. The band were purveyors of pure pop at a time when it was eating up the chart, and the question posed by this album is whether he can recapture that form.

Enjoy!

Articles - A new batch of reviews from Labelled Independent

• March 11th, 2012

As those of you who've followed us for a while know, Labelled Independent have been lucky enough to be invited to write for a number of independent music sites since starting up last year. Well, we're happy to announce that we recently started working with two newbies - neverenoughnotes.co.uk & iammusic.tv. But don't fret, that doesn't mean we've forgotten our other friends...

Here's a collection of our latest articles across the web:

Single Review: Wallis Bird - 'Encore' (Never Enough Notes)

There’s a lot to admire about Wallis Bird. Her vocals have a strength that’s unusual amongst female acoustic artists, and the fact that this single is taken from a third album release demonstrates a consistency and longevity that many in her field don’t accomplish. She also shows a bold streak in that the May tour supporting the album will consist of just her travelling around with her guitar rather than relying on the versatility offered by a full band.

Live Review - Damn Vandals 'The Beautiful Mind' EP launch, London (Iammusic.tv)

“We make a lot of noise” says Jack Kansas with a smile. Kansas, front man of London 4 piece Damn Vandals, is talking to me before they take to the stage to launch their new EP ‘The Beautiful Mind’. And now having seen the show, I can concur – they do indeed make a lot of noise, but it was definitely the good kind.

Live Review - Robinson at The Silver Bullet, London (indiemusicmag.com)

Andy Robinson, front man and songwriter for well-knitted 4 piece Robinson, is an unassuming character who is very deeply involved in his songwriting. When he speaks about it his passion and honesty is inspiring, moving through influences as diverse as Hemingway and Dylan via American novelist Bukowski.

Labelled Independent to offer new projects and services bringing exposure to independent music

• March 2nd, 2012

In less than a year ‘Labelled Independent – The New Music Podcast’ has gathered a solid base of support in its mission to bring additional exposure to independent artists and labels. The podcast, now released twice a month, has featured some of the best independent releases from around the UK since the project was founded, whether produced in bedrooms by small indie artists or expensive studios through established independent labels.

Recently we got to thinking – what else do we have to offer?

Over the coming summer months Labelled Independent are set to launch a number of services for independent acts looking for coverage. Whether it’s simply a case of getting your album reviewed online to gain more exposure, or whether you’re looking for more sizeable opportunities, we’d like to hear from you. Working on the podcast has allowed us to build a growing network of contacts to capitalise on, so we’re sure we can help you

Below is a summary of a few of the services we will be able to offer by the end of the year to suit all budgets. And don’t worry, the podcast that started it all will remain free and unchanged.
