‘Rumpelstiltskin’ by Flaming June

Taken from the 5 track EP, fully titled ‘Rumpelstiltskin & The Perils & Promises of Womanhood’, this is flowing folk with a distinctive vocal. Louise Hamilton is the creative force, a remarkable woman who works very hard to raise awareness of domestic abuse issues through her music and through community work.

http://www.flamingjune.co.uk/

‘Walls Cave In’ by Berenice Scott

As featured on the previous Labelled Independent singles round up, we wanted to play it again because it’s damn good. There’s a real lightness of touch to the production, each layer is simple and subtle, but moulds into a fantastic full sound. Great vocals and harmonies too, reminiscent of Sarah McLachlan.

http://www.berenice-scott.co.uk/

‘Shiver Shake’ by Royal Hoax

Self-titled debut album available online now, this is the lead single. Brilliantly upbeat, the video is well worth a look too – it’s a take off of the trend for flash mobbing, as the band take over a mall in the USA.

http://www.royalhoax.com/

‘Nothing I Can Do’ by Anglia

Fronted by Nickie Sallivan, a Russian singer-songwriter with a genuine love for British rock and Britpop, the new video for the track is online now, at http://angliaband.com/ - a solid pop-rock song with a few echoes of peak era Britpop about it.

http://angliaband.com/

‘High Hopes’ by Lapis Lazuli

Kent based 6 piece who blend a host of genres but mostly focus around jazz and funk stylings. Opens with some electronic touches before breaking into a sax led groove - keep your ears open for a nice breakdown section in the middle, before a very gradual rebuild. Touring this month throughout the UK, check out the website for details.

http://www.lapislazuliband.co.uk/wp/

‘Mean Old World’ by Jamie Williams & The Roots Collective

A back to basics sound, taken from the full LP ‘Good Time’, this shares the vocal qualities of Bob Dylan, with simple musical aspects. Sits nicely in the traditions of the roots-rock genres, with a chilled mood that’s easy to get your head around immediately.

http://www.jamiewilliamsandtherootscollective.co.uk/

‘Stay’ by Sir O.

Sir O., aka Saar Oron, is an Israeli singer-songwriter who recorded his EP ‘Someone You’re Thinking Of’ in a studio overlooking the Sea Of Galilee. The three EP tracks all vary, this example very much in the indie mould, reminiscent of early Coldplay, or maybe Keane, albeit with some of gloss taken off.

http://sir-o.com/

‘Do What You Want’ by AS the band

Accompanied by a, literally, haunting video, this is another independently produced track that blends its parts perfectly to create an atmosphere in a minor key. AS’s 2nd album ‘Exile’ is out now, written and recorded by a pair of Paris based artists. The album oozes quality, which is why it’s picked up some decent online support.

http://astheband.com/presskit/index.html

‘Fourth Wall’ by Hidden Orchestra (Tru Thoughts Records)

Deliciously dark electrojazz from Hidden Orchestra, signed to the consistently high quality Tru Thoughts record label. This was play listed for the recent Labelled Independent singles round-up but we simply ran out of time, so here it is in its considerable glory.

http://www.hiddenorchestra.com/

‘Cut Me Some Slack’ by Bobii Lewis

A change of pace as we move towards the end of our playlist, urban artist Bobii Lewis releases his 2nd single Cut Me Some Slack today (April 15th). Effective looping and lyrics come together well, with a catchy hook sung by the man himself. Supported by BBC Radio, MTV Base, The Independent, SBTV, and in dozens of other places – online blogs, TV, you name it, Bobii’s been getting around!

http://www.bobiilewis.com

‘Play’ by Tayla Blue

It’s not often that we play pure pop music on the podcast, but we do pride ourselves in catering for every taste. The fact is that most independent musicians who submit music to us are alternative, band based or electronica. Tayla Blue though is a Manchester artist who loves her pop, influenced by the likes of Jessie J and Katy B. She’s just 18 and demonstrates genuine talent, this is her fun, upbeat pop track, as featured on BBC Introducing.
